]]> We’re excited to share some big news from Boulder Ridge Wild Animal Park! Please join us in welcoming MJ, our very first Indian rhino calf, to his new home in Michigan.

At Boulder Ridge, MJ’s arrival is about more than just numbers. He’s part of our ongoing mission to protect wildlife, educate the public, and pioneer the future of conservation. Zoos and aquariums play a crucial role in safeguarding species, supporting scientific research, and inspiring communities to act on behalf of our planet’s incredible biodiversity.

We’re proud to see MJ embark on this new chapter at Boulder Ridge WAP. His presence here will help propel vital conservation efforts and serve as a beacon for wildlife enthusiasts and supporters alike.

]]> Reptiles & Amphibians

Reptiles are lung-breathing, scale-covered animals that are ectothermic, or “cold-blooded“. Being “cold-blooded” means that reptiles cannot regulate their own body heat so their warmth has to come from the environment around them. All reptiles are vertebrates, which means they have a backbone. Some reptiles lays eggs and some give birth to live young like mammals do. There are over 9,300 species of reptiles.

Amphibians are also “cold-blooded” vertebrates and usually live in moist areas to keep themselves from drying out. Amphibians breathe through their skin, and they absorb most of the water they need through their skin as well. They go through a process called metamorphosis, where they change shape throughout their lives. Young amphibians hatch from eggs but do not look like their parents. As they grow and develop, their body changes shape. There are over 6,800 amphibian species.

Boulder Ridge Wild Animal Park has a unique collection of 144 reptiles and amphibians representing 36 species, including 6 species of the beautiful poison dart frogs.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) recognizes 8,700 reptile species and 6,260 amphibian species. Of these, 575 species are listed as critically endangered, 921 as endangered, and 918 as vulnerable, for a total of 2,414 species at risk out of the total population. Boulder Ridge Wild Animal Park cares for 8 threatened reptile and amphibian species. Here they are protected from predators, pollution, habitat loss, and human-caused threats.

Birds are members of the class Aves, which boasts over 10,000 species. Most birds are able to fly, but some, like ostriches, kiwis, penguins, and emus, have wings but cannot fly, and other birds are far better at swimming than they are at flying. Birds are the only type of animals that have feathers, and all birds hatch from eggs. Their feathers, toenails, and scales are made of the same materials our fingernails are made of, and their bones are lightweight and sometimes hollow, which makes it easier for them to fly. Birds are very important for our environment because they eat bugs, spread plant seeds through their droppings, and provide food for other animals and humans.

Besides these things, birds are very intelligent and beautiful, and Boulder Ridge Wild Animal Park is pleased to present an extensive and diverse collection of birds for you to learn about and enjoy, including over 800 birds representing 70 different species.

Welcome to 2025 at Boulder Ridge Wild Animal Park! This year, we’re excited to present to you our New Baby Giraffes.

We are so blessed and excited to announce the healthy birth of another baby Giraffe here at Boulder Ridge Wild Animal Park!
And you can meet both of our baby Giraffes right now!
Yes, we have Giraffe sisters! Both baby Giraffes have been born here this off-season and are doing well!
Our newest baby was a bit smaller at about 5 ft tall and weighing 75 lbs. She is the daughter of Opal, one of our newer adult Giraffes, and we are also so proud to say that Opal is doing a wonderful job as a mother!
And we have so much more that we can’t share just yet…
Thank you all and come visit us to meet the new baby giraffes and see both the old and new animals in person!

There are over 5,500 different species of mammals. Mammals are found in every part of the world and are an incredibly diverse group of animals.

Boulder Ridge Wild Animal Park has over 460 mammals representing 64 different species.

We try to keep this list up to date but the animals at the zoo are subject to change.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) recognizes 5,448 mammal species. At least 21% of mammal species are considered at risk of extinction. In the United States alone there are over 80 species of endangered mammals. Boulder Ridge Wild Animal Park cares for 9 threatened mammal species, including one specie that is extinct in the wild. Here they are protected from predators, pollution, habitat loss, and human-caused threats.
